Nova Scotia has a NEW February holiday

Another SPECIAL day today! Like I said, there’s lots this month! This year is the very first year to celebrate this NEW statutory holiday. February 16th is ….?

Ok is it “FAMILY DAY” or “HERITAGE DAY”?

Family Day Canada

Family Day is not a National statutory holiday, it is only observed in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and as of 2013 also in British Columbia.  Two other provinces have holidays in February: In PEI Islander Day (new since 2009) is celebrated on the 3rd Monday in February and in Manitoba the 3rd Monday in February is the Louis Riel Day holiday. And this year there is a NEW statutory holiday in Nova Scotia but alas, it’s not Family Day….. but Nova Scotia Heritage Day.

Family Day was originally created to give people time to spend with their families. But it also provides a day off between New Years Day and Good Friday as they are approximately three months apart. That is a long space between holidays. So…Nova Scotia created their own holiday… Heritage Day for this exact same purpose!

The new holiday Nova Scotia Heritage Day will provide an opportunity to recognize a different significant figure or event in Nova Scotia’s culture and history every year.

This first year of the new holiday will celebrate human rights pioneer Viola Desmond.

Viola Desmond was a Black Nova Scotian business woman who challenged racial segregation at a film theater in New Glasgow, NS back in 1946. She refused to leave the “whites only” area of the theatre and was convicted of a minor tax violation used to enforce segregation. Desmond’s case was one of the most famous incidents of racial discrimination in Canada and helped start resistance to segregation in Nova Scotia. This happened nine years before the well known incident by Rosa Parks with whom Viola Desmond is often compared. While the case originally received little attention outside Nova Scotia at the time, it since gained notoriety as one of many cases fought for civil rights in the mid-20th century. Desmond’s case ultimately led to the elimination of segregation in Nova Scotia. On April 14, 2010, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia on the advice of the NS premier granted Desmond a free pardon. The government apologized and made known the conviction was done in error and Viola Desmond’s name was cleared.

So how to celebrate this new statutory holiday?

Common Family Day/Heritage Day activities in Canada include skating, playing hockey, snowboarding/skiing and going to various winter festivals. Also many families enjoy beaver tails and breakfasts of pancakes with maple syrup. I suppose we could add snow clean up to the list this year!!

Well…it would have been nice to all stay home together cozy in our NS tartan Pj’s ( flashback to December)

HOWEVER not the case today…

This year James was off school for the holiday but swamped with assignments, and Laura had to work, and David had to work ( a requirement of his job to work many of the stats)  I was gonna make pancakes BUT realized TOMORROW is “Pancake Day” so  instead I made beavertails.

And since James had one this afternoon and was full…he just had whipped cream!! lolIMG_8363And we had LOBSTER buns with Propeller soda ( a Halifax brewery) for dinner. These things are part of Nova Scotia and a fun thing for Heritage Day. Just a pretty relaxing day here. Love dinner when we can all eat together.

Adventure For Two

I am from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada and I'm back from traveling with my husband on an expat assignment to foreign lands. 2011-2012 we were in Shenyang, China. Spring 2012- Spring 2013 we were in Resende,RJ Brazil then back to Shenyang, China in July 2013 until the end of July 2014. Expat life WAS amazing! Adventure abounds no matter where we travel to. We really enjoyed the amazing opportunity to live and experience culture and tradition in these places. BUT now we are finished and adjusting to life in our small town in Canada. Our days of travel and adventure are not over.
