When we were taking cultural training preparing for expat, we were told to make sure to plan some things…special dinners, a trip, something fun that you can put on the calendar and look forward to. So that when you have days ( and they WILL come) that you are struggling and just want to be home in your home country where everything is comfortable and familiar, you can look at the calendar and get excited for these things.
I don’t know if this is what helped David & I to adjust to China & Brazil, maybe, because we used this wise advice. We looked at our calendar, we planned things, and we marked them on the calendar and we had fun! We had LOTS of adventures!!
We didn’t get cultural training for repat. Some say going back home is even harder… So, we are doing what worked for us before. We are planing. We are looking ahead for the rest of 2014 and into the winter of 2015 to do some fun things. After all our life for the last while has been filled with travel and events, how can we just stop? We don’t have it all figured out but we have lots of ideas to work through and decide and get on a calendar. But in the meantime while we do that and work on our home and gardens, making it ours and the way we like it again, we are thankful that there are already things in place this summer that we are so looking forward to.
David’s twin brother will be in Nova Scotia for a few weeks in August and one of our closest friends and his family arrived the same day we did. PLUS it’s summertime and the South Shore has some of the most beautiful beaches. There’s BBQing and fresh air, and spending time with our children, family and friends, and yeah there’s things to do this month…
I know it’s gonna be an adjustment and I will have days that I WANT to be back in China, I have already, but there are also some wonderful things here at home we are really looking forward to!
