Laowai is a commonly used Mandarin Chinese word. It is a shorter, informal version of wàiguórén 外国人 meaning “foreigner”
We hear it ALL the time walking down the street when we are out and about, ESPECIALLY if there is more than two of us!
Laowai Lunch is the name given to the weekly gathering at Casey’s of foreigners! We haven’t had chance to get to one of the Laowai Lunch’s for awhile so today we went! I love having dinners with my Chinese friends but I also really love these get togethers of fellow expats. There are becoming fewer of us in Shenyang as assignments wrap up and seems like every weekend another family is finished and flying home. Also the international school is out for the summer and many of the Moms and kids are flying home for the summer months while the Dads stay in Shenyang working. There weren’t a lot of people at the lunch today, but we had a wonderful time catching up with those who were. Casey’s restaurant is a perfect spot for these summertime lunches on the sidewalk under the shade of the big trees and the food is delicious!
