Today is our first trip out of the city with the boys!
We are going close to North Korea! Dandong city to be exact. James has been to Dandong on his first visit to China. Many people go to the DMZ in South Korea to get a glimpse of North Korea. David & I did when we went to South Korea! But since we can’t travel to South Korea with the boys we are doing the next best thing. Great wall, friendship bridge, a gaze across the river at North Korea…Dandong city is about 3 hours from Shenyang and will do just fine. And it is a beautiful day here, so cameras with zoom will give us a perfect view into the backyard of North Korea.
Dandong was an important frontier settlement in ancient China. The easternmost section of the Great Wall of China here was constructed at Hu Shan to protect against Korea invaders during the late Ming and early Qing dynasty. Today the Hu Shan Great Wall section overlooks Sinuiju, North Korea. You can even get close and take a boat ride down the Yalu River. The banks of the Yalu River are an example of the contrast between Chinese-style capitalism and North Korean communism. Dandong’s condominiums tower over the river, while fields and empty hills dominate the North Korean landscape.
We had a great day exploring. Today was Jonathan’s first time seeing a section of the Great Wall of China and by visiting us in Shenyang, he came very close to North Korea too! ( He also got his first taste of how crazy the paparazzi can be when the “white foreigners” are visiting key places in China 😀
Just another interesting day at the Great Wall of China for these Canadians!
