- More than 50% of people in Cambodia are under 21 years old, and over one third of the population lives below the poverty line.
- The number of street children (estimated at 10,000 to 20,000) is increasing at a rate of 20 per cent per year. Factors as to why children are on the streets include poverty, domestic violence, rapid population growth, and rural-urban migration.
Something that truly has captured my heart in Cambodia are the beautiful children. The MANY children that hang out at the temple EVERY day just to pick up a few dollars from the tourists.
“Just a dolla mame” “Pleeeease…. oh the faces…and the smiles when you buy one more bracelet or one more of whatever…. ” Where you from mame? What’s your name mame? Anna please buy from me! You remember me, Anna” Words that tug at your heart. Eyes that look at you pleading. David doesn’t dare give me very much money when we go in to the temples because this is where I would become very poor…I LOVE these beautiful Cambodian children!
