Who doesn’t like to make new friends? We are constantly meeting new foreigners and while that is so wonderful, It is especially interesting to have friends from the country you are living in. You can LEARN so much from them and because we are English speaking and Canadian, Chinese people are always very interested in us and like to either learn some English or practice the English they already know.
Tonight we had an invitation from a couple that I met in person briefly our last time here, we have been corresponding a bit over the last year or so. Because we are back in Shenyang, they wanted to “treat” us to dinner. This is a typical Chinese tradition when someone is going away or returning.
Wei Quan & Li Dan Yao are about our age, with a young son James’ age. He is currently in Canada in his second year studying to be a pilot. Wei Quan & Li Dan Yao both work for CAAC- Civil Aviation Administration of China and are very proud their son is studying to be a pilot.
Wei Quan picked us up with a company van and driver and we went to a very nice restaurant for authentic Chinese dishes. These experiences are quite interesting and I will always treasure the opportunities we have. Wei Quan speaks and understands some English, Li Dan Yao does not so the evening was interesting with much of the conversation needing to be translated or sometimes small silent moments wondering “what to say now?”
It was a lot of fun and next time it will be our treat, maybe some western food! Maybe David has had his fill of “authentic local cuisine” for a little bit!
I think this time there will be a greater opportunity to meet and socialize with more Chinese people. Our new landlords Renee & B said “We are gonna be great friends, you’ll see” the first day we met! Oh my! This year could be very interesting!
Wǒ bǎole! But it was a FANTASTIC evening!
