Brazil in Mourning this week!

From China to Canada everyone is asking us questions about this…

so I thought I would do a short post about it.

A huge shocker on the Brazil news Sunday morning that spread around the country and across the world was the Brazil night club fire in Santa Maria southern Brazil where over 2oo young people died.

We were sitting in the lobby of our hotel in Rio Sunday morning when we first saw this tragedy. The Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff,  cut short a visit to Chile and has returned home to Brazil.

All over Brazil this week Flags are flying at half mast. I can’t imagine what parents are going through…some lost both of their children…

News reports say the fire at the KISS night club in Santa Maria could have been caused by the band’s pyrotechnics. There was no alarm, no extinguishers, no sprinklers and almost no escape from the nightclub that became a death trap for more than 200 Brazilian college students. Brazilian authorities have now arrested three people in connection to the fire. The owner of the popular Kiss nightclub, a member of the band Gurizada Fandangueira and the club’s security chief have been arrested and are being questioned by police, A fourth person, who is a co-owner of the club, is still being sought by police. Reports say that club security didn’t allow the students to leave because they thought they were skipping out without paying. Such a tragedy…

This disaster is the worst fire of its kind in more than a decade. It is also raising questions of whether Brazil is up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues ahead of it hosting next year’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics…

Adventure For Two

I am from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada and I'm back from traveling with my husband on an expat assignment to foreign lands. 2011-2012 we were in Shenyang, China. Spring 2012- Spring 2013 we were in Resende,RJ Brazil then back to Shenyang, China in July 2013 until the end of July 2014. Expat life WAS amazing! Adventure abounds no matter where we travel to. We really enjoyed the amazing opportunity to live and experience culture and tradition in these places. BUT now we are finished and adjusting to life in our small town in Canada. Our days of travel and adventure are not over.
