If you think Dengue is only something from the movie George of The Jungle or Tarzan then you are quite mistaken!
With more than one-third of the world’s population living in areas at risk for transmission, dengue infection is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics.
As many as 100 million people are infected yearly. Dengue is caused by any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. As of yet, there are no vaccines to prevent infection with dengue virus. That is surprising with all the shots and vaccines we had to get to live in China and Brazil. The most effective protective measures are to avoid mosquito bites. Easier said then done, living in Brazil! This time of year…Summer…there ARE mosquitoes! And LOTS of them 😦
This disease is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes and cannot be spread person to person. Severe dengue can be fatal, but with good treatment, less than 1% of patients die from dengue.
Symptoms of dengue include:
- pain behind the eyes
- joint and muscle pain
- mild bleeding, such as nose or gum bleeding or easy bruising
It is common for us to see headlines and news articles here in Brazil about Dengue infection. It is a serious situation.
