Dengue

If you think Dengue is only something from the movie George of The Jungle or Tarzan then you are quite mistaken!

With more than one-third of the world’s population living in areas at risk for transmission, dengue infection is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics.

As many as 100 million people are infected yearly. Dengue is caused by any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. As of yet, there are no vaccines to prevent infection with dengue virus. That is surprising with all the shots and vaccines we had to get to live in China and Brazil. The most effective protective measures are to avoid mosquito bites. Easier said then done, living in Brazil! This time of year…Summer…there ARE mosquitoes! And LOTS of them 😦

This disease is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes and cannot be spread person to person. Severe dengue can be fatal, but with good treatment, less than 1% of patients die from dengue.

Symptoms of dengue include:

  • fever
  • headache
  • pain behind the eyes
  • joint and muscle pain
  • rash
  • nausea/vomiting
  • mild bleeding, such as nose or gum bleeding or easy bruising

It is common for us to see headlines and news articles here in Brazil about Dengue infection. It is a serious situation.

Researchers in Brazil are genetically modifying mosquitoes in the hope of wiping them out in the wild and ending the spread of dengue fever.

It’s a little scary sometimes but the big thing for us to try and avoid areas where there are lots of mosquitoes.

There was a notice in the elevator the other day… that an inspection was done at Grand Life ( our condo) and everything was OK!! I am not sure what or how an inspection was done but I guess it makes me feel better.

Well for us, it just means from now until probably April we need to be a little more careful when we are outside these nice evenings!

Yay, It’s Friday!…..sexta feira!  adoro!!!! Tenha um bom fim de semana!

Adventure For Two

I am from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada and I'm back from traveling with my husband on an expat assignment to foreign lands. 2011-2012 we were in Shenyang, China. Spring 2012- Spring 2013 we were in Resende,RJ Brazil then back to Shenyang, China in July 2013 until the end of July 2014. Expat life WAS amazing! Adventure abounds no matter where we travel to. We really enjoyed the amazing opportunity to live and experience culture and tradition in these places. BUT now we are finished and adjusting to life in our small town in Canada. Our days of travel and adventure are not over.
